The CASEE Summer School 2018 on the topic of "Sustainable Food Production Chain" was organized by the Faculty of Human Nutrition and Consumer Science at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Poland, from 16th July until 23rd July 2018.

The Summer School was held in Rogów - WULS Educational Centre for Natural Forest Management, within the framework and with the partner institutions of the Joint Master's Degree Programme in sustainability in Agriculture, Food Production and Food Technology in the Danube Region. Altogether 18 students and 10 lecturers from a variety of cultural backgrounds participated in the summer school. Their attendance has supported by the CASEE Fund for Incentives and by CEEPUS grants. The school contributed to the target of the international Joint Degree Master Programme Danube AgriFood Master. The summer school covered topics such as (a) the idea of the sustainable food production (b) insight into the sustainable food chain in the studied region and (c) gaining knowledge about the most important aspects of sustainable food production chain by interaction with stakeholders. 

The summer school program included: introductory and methodological workshops conducted by the organizers, lectures and workshops conducted by teachers from partner universities and study visits to farms and enterprises which implement sustainable food production. After each study visit, reflection sessions were conducted, where the students and teachers discussed and analyzed the visits, based on the SWOT analysis and the IFOAM criteria. 

In total, there were 10 lectures, two workshops, four study visits, four reflection sessions, a visit to the Arboretum; one of the largest botanical gardens of its kind in Poland, and an excursion to the heritage park in Maurzyce near Łowicz, which collects monuments of folk architecture. The lectures given during the Summer School covered topics related to the sustainable food production chain:

  • Social and cultural context of food
  • Origin of organic farming in Central and Eastern Europe
    (the case of Czechia)
  • Sustainability in Irrigated Agriculture
  • Principles of the biological control. Biological insecticides based on microorganisms
  • Organic apiculture (directives, practice, transition, bee pastures, contamination of bee products, inspection)
  • Forest fruits as the enrichment of the local diets
  • Sustainability in Irrigated Agriculture
  • Sustainable food production – green diets for Europe
  • Organic food quality and impact on human health

The students (5 from BOKU in Austria, 4 from UNIZG Croatia, 3 from USAMVBT Romania, 4 from SZIE Hungary and 2 from WULS Poland) were given the opportunity to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge in a practical case. They worked together in four groups, their goal being to analyze and evaluate, on the basis of IFOAM criteria and SWOT analysis, the most important aspects of the sustainable food production chain by interacting with stakeholders from case study visits. Students provided ppt presentations for all the discussed cases, which were evaluated by a committee which consisted of teachers participating in the summer school. At the end of the summer school, participants received certificates confirming their participation in the summer school.
